Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Find out more about our free solar and battery program.

Is this program really free?

Yes—truly free. Unlike past offers you’ve seen like “free panels” or “no upfront cost” that end up being financed loans or power purchase agreements, this program is 100% state-subsidized . That means there’s no loan, no lien, and no hidden catch. The state pays the contractor directly , covering all installation costs—so you pay nothing out of pocket . It’s not too good to be true—it’s just finally being done right.

The only requirement to qualify is that the household makes less than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI)  — based on your county and household size.

And yes — renters qualify too.

If a tenant meets the income requirement, the property owner gets the solar + battery system installed for free . No credit checks, no out-of-pocket costs, no catch. It’s one of the most accessible clean energy programs California has ever offered.

Qualification is primarily based on household income. If your total income is less than 80% of your Area Median Income (AMI)—as defined by HUD—you likely qualify.

There are two simple ways to verify:

  • Submit your most recent tax return, or
  • Show proof you’re enrolled in a utility discount program like CARE, FERA, SESH, or similar.

To get started, just complete the application below. Our Program Administrator will review your submission and confirm your eligibility.

Benefits include significantly reduced electricity bills, protection against power outages with battery backup, increased home value, and contributing to a cleaner environment by using renewable energy.

SGIP is a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) program that provides incentives to support existing, new, and emerging distributed energy resources. It’s designed to encourage the adoption of clean energy technologies, including battery storage systems.

Once you qualify and approve the system design, the installation process typically takes 1-3 days. Permitting times can vary by locality but we handle all of that for you.

See If You Qualify

Fill out the form below to start your journey towards energy independence. It only takes a few minutes!

    SGIP Application

    Property Information

Enter the details of the property where the energy storage system will be installed. This helps confirm program eligibility, utility jurisdiction, and project feasibility. Please double-check for accuracy.

    Address

    Host Customer Information

Please provide the information for the Host Customer, which refers to the person listed on the utility account at the installation address. In rental situations, this will typically be the tenant, not the property owner. This individual will be the one required to complete income verification for SGIP eligibility.

    Electrical Utility Information

Please provide details about the utility service at the property where the solar and/or battery system will be installed. This information is required to verify eligibility for SGIP funding and ensure your application is submitted correctly.

Green Button Data is an Excel file available through your online utility account that shows your historical electricity usage. This file is required to properly size your solar and battery system and to determine your eligibility for the SGIP program. Please download and upload the complete file as part of your application.

If you do not have this file, please go back and select that you do not have a copy and provide your online utility login credentials. Our software will securely retrieve the data directly from your utility company.

    Income Verfication

To qualify for SGIP, the Host Customer must verify that their household income is at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Acceptable documentation includes a recent tax return or proof of enrollment in a qualifying utility company program such as CARE, FERA, ESA, SASH, DAC-SASH, MASH, or SOMAH. If no tax return is available, alternative documentation may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
